Remediation 360: Words with Friends Board Game
In our Mobile Technology class session, we discussed how new media platforms 'remediate' the familiar and assimilate it into the new technological form.
We talked about the mobile phone app Words with Friends as an example of a remediation of the board game Scrabble into the 3.5-inch mobile screen.
As mentioned in class, in an amusing 'Remediation 360', a board game version of Words with Friends has been created, check it out: Words with Friends board game.
Thanks for Marysa for sending along the link!

Remixing: Bad Lip Reading 1st Debate
One of many examples of a Remix / Remediation: taking an original video source and adding to it in a way that uses what we already know about the content, but mixes it in a creative way that adds new meaning.
And here's the same technique applied to the Hunger Games. How many categories of Remix can YOU find on YouTube?
Web Survey Tools - Compared
For Research Project groups that decide to engage in quantitative (survey) research, here is a pretty good article that lists several online SURVEY tools, with their pro's/con's.
Survey Monkey is very common and free, but limits the number of total questions you can ask, so it's good to know the limits of your survey tools BEFORE you decide on your survey form and number of questions!

Social Media...and the Presidency
For a vivid example of our last week discussion on the democratizing effect of social media on leveling public discussion, we need look no further than Presidential Debate that took place two days after our class.
Candidate Mitt Romney, responding to a question about how to create equality of opportunity for women in the workplace, made a now-famous reference to "binders full of women" that he had to seek out from women's groups because he could not find qualified women to apply for cabinet positions when he was Governor of Massachussetts.
Even before the debate was over, a Facebook Fan page "Binders Full of Women" had been created and had 100,000 likes. That page now has more than one-third of a million likes, and has become a place where workplace issues important to women are shared and discussed.
Here is an article from the (UK) Guardian Newspaper analyzing the phrase that set off the social firestorm, and documenting how quickly the audience responded and took over the narrative via social media.
A pretty interesting example of the real-time, real-life impacts of Social Media on the important issues of our time.

Just a quick reminder, per my Monday class announcement, that Sunday at 5 pm is the last chance to submit any outstanding / overdue assignments for partial credit. I won't be reviewing late assignments submitted after that time, thanks.

Grades updated, Midterm grades posted
Quick update that grades have been updated with the final part of the Audio Project - the personal reflection papers - and the updated Midterm grades have been posted through the zzusis system.
Note that the spreadsheet of grades I handed out at Monday's class was incorrectly set to round UP to the next nearest point. Since Final Grades are not calculated that way - per the grading and point system in the class syllabus - I corrected that rounding error when submitting Midterm grades.

KGW Field Trip Photos
Hope you enjoyed the visit to KGW Studios, here is our 'Class Photo' and a couple of extras. I also tweeted the photo with the (correct!) hashtag #wsuvdtc375. And the class blog is updated with next week's homework assignment. -- Prof M
Video: TV anchor tells off critical viewer
Here is that video Stephanie Stricklen (@StephStricklen on Twitter) was discussing at our KGW Field Trip tonight. Note the crucial role that social media played in turning what would typically be a private criticism into a public discussion about fair treatment and bullying.

Assignments and Grades!
A quick update that I will be returning graded copies of Exercises 1, 2 and 3 at Monday's field trip class...
And will be posting individual grades to date. Time permitting, I may be able to complete grading the Audio Remediation Projects by Monday as well. So look for grades Monday night.
Also, please check your email this weekend - I'll be sending out a few notes regarding missing papers, will want to be sure I have in my hands any late work for at least partial credit.
Regardes,

Facebook just released its first-ever advertisement. Is Facebook like a chair?
The ad attempts to explore the question: What is the nature of 'being social'?

Student Examples: Journal Article Review
Research Project, part 1: Defining Your Topic
The first step in the research process is to identify your Research Question. This can be posed as either a question ("Does an interactive teaching environment more effective for teaching students?" or it can be stated as a thesis ("Interactive teaching approaches result in higher rates of learning.")
The first step is to find a subject area that interests you, for example what is the effect of social media on self-esteem?
This is a great topic for research. It's also far too broad to offer a researcher any hope of coming to a definitive conclusion.
Once you have selected a broad area of interest, word hard to narrow your focus. Instead of the broad relationship between social media and self-esteem, pick a specific form of social media, like Facebook; pick a specific group to study, like middle schoolers or divorced people or latinos or married men, etc. Even then, see if you can narrow your question down further.
Head to the research library and find a few articles that overlap with your area of interest. Then head to the back of the journal articles, where the authors admit things they missed, new questions worth pursuing, etc. This is the process of focusing your research question!
